The challenge
In lakeside communities like Dzemeni, access to healthcare remains out of reach for many due to financial barriers. Without active National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards, families — especially women, children, and the elderly — are forced to delay or avoid treatment. Compounded by high malaria prevalence and poor nutrition, the lack of healthcare access contributes to preventable illness and loss of livelihoods.
The Intervention & What We Achieved
To close this gap, WCNDF launched a large-scale NHIS access and health support outreach in Dzemeni.
The initiative began with the CEO of WCNDF addressing an overwhelming crowd of residents gathered for free NHIS registration and renewal services. Over 4,000 beneficiaries were successfully onboarded onto Ghana’s national healthcare system — ensuring they could access hospitals and clinics without financial burden.
To make the process sustainable, participants also received training on how to use the NHIS mobile app, enabling smoother renewals and easier access to services in the future.
Beyond registration, WCNDF extended care with distribution of treated mosquito nets to protect families from malaria — a leading health threat in the Volta Lake region — and packed meals to support vulnerable participants during the long registration exercise.
